Description
The Costa de Las Galletas in the municipality of Arona, constitutes the largest area of banana cultivation in greenhouses in Tenerife. In this volcanic territory, the emigration of palm farmers carried out enormous specialist work, since the 1970s, to improve the production of Canarian bananas and export more than 26,000 tons each year to the peninsular and European markets.
Finca Las Margaritas began with the cultivation of bananas in 1977.
Like the rest of the nearby farms, Finca Las Margaritas overcame difficult conditions in the territory for agricultural implantation: strong insolation and wind, volcanic flows, non-availability of water, large investments of capital and machinery, soils poor in organic matter; and in which old terraces for tomato cultivation were also used.
Guided tours are carried out to learn about the nature and culture of the banana for groups (and self-guided for independent people) with great didactic content, through a small accessible tour. At the end we take a break in El Cuartito, we taste bananas and complementary products and we show how gofio is made in a traditional way.
